He stopped, turned around and posed for me!

Still I feel somehow touched by the devotion the Indian people have towards their choice of higher power. In this case Lord Rama. Having backpacked across Indon and Thailand where the tale Ramayana is known by one and all, it is fabulous to be standing at the very spot believed to be part of the grand saga. I've read the Ramayana about a thousand times as a child. I love it to bits. I am enormously humbled.

Behold the splendor of the Pamban bridge. It gives me a clear view of Sri Lanka and what I see is absolutely breathtaking :D The Pamban Bridge on the Palk Strait connects Rameswaram to mainland India. It refers to both the road bridge and the railway bridge. It was India's first sea bridge.

Rameswaram is a town in Ramanathapuram district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located on an island separated from mainland India by the Pamban channel and is less than 40 kilometres from the Jaffna Peninsula, Sri Lanka.

Together with Kashi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimages. Hence, it is a bustling pilgrim center.

We depart from Madurai for a day journey to East Tamil Nadu. My aunt having mentioned of the holy 22 wells has me jumping up the wall with curiosity. Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected what I next saw!

Here's how it goes... You hop off the bus, men bombard you with guide tips. One says 500 Rupees each! I look to my left and there is a board stating that one only has to pay one tenth of the price he's quoted!!! I AM SOOOO PISSED! I've spent the past days just in awe at the cheek temples have draining the people out of money in the name of 'The Lord'. I refuse to pay thus refuse to go through the ritual. I just felt it defeated the purpose really... neither did I want to do something beyond my comprehension for now... my aunts toss me their bags and proceed to move from well 1 - 22.

Each well allows the devotee the chance of being 'washed' with holy water from different parts of India. The guide drags you from one well to another in the speed of light as he tossed a bucket filled with water at each stop. He finds my argument amusing and sprinkles the holy water on me anyways..Hmph!

Lastly one reaches the most known, Holy Ganga! Well Number 22! You have a sip and move to the altar situated next to it and say a prayer to complete the journey. The guide proceeds to inform the priest of my rebel streak as I keep the look of sheer frustration plastered on my face.

The priest laughs... seems to think I'm as harmless as a kitten, female trying to fight an entire society built on the principle of money to temple = pleasing the lord = money in the future for me! Aaaaarrrrgggghhh! He keeps laughing, blesses my head as he says ' May she find a good husband' *hint hint*... someone that can keep up with her :P

All in all, it is a beautiful temple and one not to be missed if one is in Tamil Nadu! It is an experience not to be missed though I truly become more displeased with what has become of Hinduism today!

As we sit by the temple to bask in the glory of the sun, people are naturally drawn to us. We look Indian, but not quite. People are quick to guess we're of the Sri Lankan bloodline to my surprise!

I talk to an aunty and her daughter next to me... she says I remind her of her daughter currently trying to make a living in Malaysia. She speaks of the country with a fondness that I believe comes from alot of hours spent in front of the travel channel :)) The perks of backpacking as opposed to the traditional tourist route... experiencing culture first hand! There's always someone I'm talking to and learning from :D *High five! The end of education is character!*

This lady says 'Your face is SUPER *thumbs up*... Here's a free necklace from one sister to another'. I'm shocked as it's her bread and butter. She feeds her children with these beads. To those just looking for money, I'm absolutely capable of playing the fool that doesn't comprehend Tamil rendering them incapable of begging :P She points us to a restaurant for lunch.

When night falls, we head down to Thirumalai Naicker Palace. The attraction is the light show that plays twice every night. Worth it? Not at all. For a structure of such magnificence, it needs to be viewed during the day.

The light show comprises of a play of some sorts. The tale of the King of Madurai with light switching on and off as the story unfolds.

Our time in Madurai ends with my new favourite alternative to roti canai... CHILLI PARATTA! OMG... Divine! It's like roti canai, sliced, seasoned and served with sour yogurt with pickled onions.

A stop at the ice cream parlour... creamy and really milky.
Loved it!

When one is not capable of epic experiences constantly...
a book will do instead :D

I think the introduction of such a wide variety of books as a child allowed me to stretch my views and look beyond the bubble I lived in. This gives a child a different perspective in life thus enhancing their ability to see the bigger picture. Some of my favourite books... I believe are the sole reason for my manic sense of imagination and need for adventure as a grown woman today :))

So, I've just touched down at Trichy, Tamil Nadu. It's still bright out! India's a few hours behind Malaysia so I've just earned a little extra time to travel to where my auts are at...Madurai.

Hopping out of the tiny airport, I head straight to the central bus station for my 4-5 hour journey to Madurai. Thoughts in mind are for a private, comfy but not too expensive bus. I spot one with the help of an aunty and my ride to Madurai begins!

Madurai - The city of Temples!

Madurai is built around the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple. Obviously, it's an absolutely humongous infrastructure worthy of a few days of exploration :D We wake up bright and bushytailed in our room that fits three, Hotel SriRamaKrishna at Rs 750 per night and head down the road to the temple.

Don't expect luxury while backpacking!

erm, my aunties are in their pyjamas :P

Fabulous 'mini temples' are spread along the road. We take the time to visit a few and have breakfast. The thing about Tamil Nadu is... it's staple breakfast consist of sinful fluffy idli + hot vegetable filled sambar + chili red chutney + mint coconut green chili chutney + beyond fantastic cow's milk coffee!

Ahaaaa... if one travels to India... one MUST know of the scum of humanity which are the cousins of the notorious clan of taxis, tuk tuks, trishaw... AUTO! These auto men only place meters for show. They are absolutely bent on getting as much money as they can for the shortest distance possible. Rule of thumb... Always asks a few to get an idea of the range of cost before settling for a driver!

It's funny because I'm extremely protective of my 'nerdy/serious' alter ego. The people I truly trust are those I allow a glimpse into my Telecommunications Engineer, I freaking love Electromagnetics and maths world.

My fellow engineer BFF DuDu is just one of those that you know will be absolutely blunt with you. I enjoy running by my thought process with her because I value her input especially with life changing decisions. We connect on so many levels... be it the 'blacksheep' of the family syndrome... boyband infatuation... tecnology loves... shoe-aholicness... Starbucks-aholicness?

Funny why? I've just realised that I've crossed the threshold of being a workaholic because she's had her blog up and running for such a long time AND I DIDN'T KNOW! ME! SNOOPY! I read her words all afternoon and she's a whole grown up woman now. So thoughtful. So honest. I really enjoyed flipping page to page. So, I've been working really hard this past weeks trying to raise enough money to travel in style to Tamil Nadu and back.

Yes, I've backpacked across countries BUT NONE LIKE INDIA! People keep giggling secretly to themselves as I explain that I intend on arriving there A.L.O.N.E

*Pause...Breathe...*
*What have I got myself into!*

Issues that scare the shit out of me include:

1. You guessed this one right... THE NUMERO UNO... INDIAN MEN. God bless the fact that the kama sutra came from India. As one would guess... for the lack of a better word, Indian men are in a constant state of high for sex. Women are still in a struggle to overcome the 'inferior to men' tag in India. Thus, I am terrified of any acts of molestation, groping, whooting, pheeeweeting, 'hey pretty mama' -ing. Seriously, very very terrified.

2. All forms of robbery. As one would expect from a country with extremes in the rich and poor crowd, pickpocketing is a norm. What would be worse is robbery with brutal force. I want to be able to hold on to my money. I want to buy glorious sarees. I want to experience food. This takes $$$.

3. Stuffing my face with local food while I try to learn new recipes is fabulous when its consequences DO NOT include FOOD POISONING. I was absolutely careful when I began my trip to Indonesia... thought 'Hey, I'm a strong woman'... nyom nyom nyom street food... came back and had the worst food poisoning ever! NEVER AGAIN!

4. Traveling on my own as I journey to meet my aunts is going to be an adventure. TRANSPORTATION worries me too. My mum calls me up today ' Didn't see the papers? Train in India derailed! People died!' Sigh, train? bus? auto? Which is safer?

5. I'm Malaysian, Keturunan Tamil Sri Lanka... thus somewhere along the road... history takes me back to India. I wonder of the effects of CULTURE SHOCK . Will I feel powerless being a woman? Will I be seen as just 'the body' not 'the brains'? Will it put my mind into overdrive as I walk through temples and wonder why people perform certain rituals without question? Will I feel the need to decipher why the people are so poor? uneducated? violent?

Wish me luck... I'll be off for 2 weeks.

I KNOW this will be the learning experience of a lifetime :D

Today, someone presumed that because of my sex and age... I should be paid less than those twice my age. Did I put up a fight worthy of a blog entry? Yes, like a glorious amazon woman in the heat of battle! MY AGE or SEX HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY CAPABILITY or INTELLIGENCE... my years of education and experience does! Do I still feel icky about it? Yeap. It's interesting because as I defend myself and earn the extra $$$ I believe I deserve, I slowly rediscover what I've always held important. The check didn't mean so much anymore. There's something else I value more.

I think it's time to slow down, reevaluate my goals, focus on long term goals, forget instant gratification in the form of pay checks, believe comfortableness is overated and toss myself into greater challenges, gain independence, rediscover my greatest potential....Thesis completion, here I come!

I was just telling Lata yesterday how it just baffles me that some women confuse being a strong woman with the female equivalent of tough (ghetto) talk. Don't get it?

Being a fairly non melodramatic woman... I solve issues by stating facts, offering opinions and listing out the obvious. We get into a healthy debate and each steps away with the option of accepting or not what the other has said. Then you have the women that can not accept confrontation. This woman commences to defend herself by any means necessary with the inclusion of being just plain rude!

If there is one thing I do not condone...

it is disrespectful rudeness...

be it the young or old.

Situation: Recently, a student of mine with international parents has been having trouble with getting the school to step up their performance. Having paid each term the equivalence of my entire Masters course fees, I believed their cause to be just and wrote an extremely professional letter on their behalf where I list areas that they can improve. You would think a headmistress would have an ounce of professionalism! With all her might, she's threatened to SUE ME due to 'image damage'! Was extremely rude to my kid's parents, trying to belittle them with empty threats just because they were foreign! The end of education equals character and these women clearly have missed the point!

pps: pls don't sue me...i believe in freedom of speech... i iz a good person... i iz also poor person... mum said she will let me rot in jail.

I've been struggling to keep up with the pace of the past few weeks. It's been just a rush of days zooming here and there. I get home at 11pm daily... I then have more to do... oh sleep glorious sleep... where art thou! It is striking a balance between what I want to do... making a difference and what I need to do... project deadlines, thesis, lesson plans.

It clearly isn't easy but it's a learning experience. Given the workload, walk into a cafe and you'll probably still spot me there. Hop into a mall, I'd be there too :)) I work hard to allow myself to play hard :D

I wake up bright and early for a well, what all men would call 'Chick Lit Day'. Cakes, Coffee, Talk, Laughs, Fluffy Skirts and Massive Heels. Me and Gay head down to Jaya Noodle House at Jaya One for lunch.

I'm an extreme lover of Chinese Noodles and this didn't disappoint. I loved it! The dumplings were perfect, filled with meat and flavour. A great cure for the flu. Lovely for a cold rainy day. The price is about RM7-15 perdish so I'd say that is slightly pricey for noodles. Tummies satisfied, we move on to Delish at Bangsar Village!

GIRLY HEAVEN! Thing is, we headed down to Bangsar for a slice of cake at Marmalade but couldn't resist... OMG...OMG... Senses Orgasm... It's like there's a church choir in my head! My eyes widen at the sight of huge cupcakes. My tongue tingles as I glimpse at the Caramel Slice. Mmmmmm.... *thud falls on floor*

I will be making a return to Delish very soon. It's a place for women to mingle and men to jingle. There's something for all sugar cravings. My mum lives in a world where we're half British *we lurves BBCE!* thus the constant biscuit and tea visits to Marks & Spencer. Also being paupers in denial, we window shop until a sale comes on then go in and grab all that we need... one day she came home with what I'll call HEAVEN'S POTION FOR CURLY HAIR!

I give my hair a moist mask with Indian coconut oil the night before and you still need to condition the bottom ends of your hair but other than that... This shampoo, is puuuurfect for girls with super curls. My hair is bouncy, curls well formed and I've been asked ' That can't be your natural hair!' Lets just say, I've tried tons of mucho bank breaking 'salon recommended' products, I've broken many combs in my lifetime while trying really hard to tame my psycho afro hair :P

ps: The key is to work with what nature gave you... it says you're proud of what you are... ditch the rebonding / perms... it damages the hair oh so much... go natural! I have to admit life is gooooood when curls are 'IN' :D

It's a work work work week... I'm trying to squeeze as many classes as I can before the holidays set in and we all go into hibernate mode :)) Going through the same routine day after day for this past week has reaffirmed my original thoughts of absolutely detesting a regular 9-5 job.

My thoughts are: To survive in this dog eat dog world, if I DO NOT want the regular life... what else can I do... that I love doing... to bring in extra dough... extra $$$ * kaaaaching!*

1. Just prance around in lovely clothes and hope people will be duped into thinking I am the fashionista and they all want to buy them off me.

2. Open a mani/pedi/therapy session for women that need an outlet for releasing the rage within... punching bags available.

3. Do the Msian version of the Paris Hilton line 'That's Hot... Itu Meletup' and pray they believe me to be a rich socialite and offer me massive $$$ to dress up and attend glorious parties.

4. Roll about the lake gardens pretending to do a legitimate form of classical dance and people will toss obscene amounts of money begging me to roll about at their royal balls.

5. Use what nature gave me, shake my booty and slowly shimmy into a rapper's video or a Bollywood dance sequence to gain exposure and then slowly move my way up the ladder to conquer the world and earn millions like Oprah.

6. Write a ridiculous self help book along the lines of 'The Real Secret' that everyone will gush about and buy for their friends and it'll appear on all famous talk shows. We'll sit on a round table together and people will have 'lightbulb moments'

7. Solve a tremendously super duper hard math equation that leads to the design of the world's best gadget, it's like your whole house is in the tip of your hands... Hooorah... Newton who? Maxwell who!

So there, I'll let you know if anything else comes to mind eh.

I don't get Monday blues because well, multijobbers don't have the luxury of keeping track of the days of the week :P I toss on my floral dress and head to class and teach my two oldest pupils. These kids have ridiculously good looking parents thus by default are extremely easy on the eyes themselves. The oldest, a boy and the youngest, a girl.

A moment of pure unadulterated glory for me today was as we ended class and together headed towards the parking lot. The girl, a 'believes she's a grown up' 8 years old turns to the never ending mirror on the wall. Practically in tears, scratching at her face, she screams at her mum 'I'm so ugly... I look like a monkey...donkey' The look on her face breaks my heart because no girl that young should feel less than a little perfect princess! It's just ridiculous because she's gorgeous just like her mum! Darn the media! Darn social pressure! Being in a private school makes things tougher because these kids live for society's approval.

As I get ready to give her my typical 'No one is ugly, pretty on the inside equals pretty on the outside!' I DIDN'T HAVE TO! Her brother, a man of 14 years old... runs to her and quotes me 'You're ugly only if you believe you're ugly' I SWELLED UP WITH PRIDE :D She instantly has a smile on her little face. He may not be an A+++ student but I know that men can grow up to be EXTREMELY shallow. At that moment I realised he's no longer my 'Boi Boi' but now a man. I'm beyond proud of the man he's turned into. I know he'd treat a woman with the respect she deserves. If all else fails, I've clearly made a tiny mark in the world :)

ps: They say that a woman gets her confidence from the men in her life... be it her father, brother, grandfather. How they behave towards women will shape the views these girls have of themselves! Shapes the type of men they want for a partner! Like most girls, me and BooBoo have been told we're nothing short of perfect little princesses :D

Gosh, my feet hurt like hell today... I was on a Friday - got - to -wear - heels marathon... hop hop hop... lrt to monorail... monorail to lrt... window shop shop shop.

Thing that totally scared the crap out of me was... since driving MAD, I've been able to successfully filter out MOST perverts... today as I got out of the Dang Wangi LRT station and headed down the road to Bkt. Nanas Monorail... I was approached first by one monk... he comes to me speaking a foreign language then pulls out a book and as he tries to explain his temple charity fund... POKES ME IN THE BOOBS WITH IT! WTH? I said 'No' and brushed it off as he was being eager for money is all. Reaching the Monorail station... THERE WAS ANOTHER ONE! This monk headed towards me... even though I clearly was trying to avoid him... FREAKING POKES ME IN THE BOOB again with his book with huge eye balls gazing at them! NOT JUST POKE! Usually I'd prefer to call on the security guard but it felt so wrong that they were monks and behaving so with a 'religious' agenda. I was just flabbergasted. Creeped out. They didn't speak my language or at least pretended to be so, I couldn't yell at them either. It's just sad... I travelled across Thailand and have the most respect for monks, Buddhism in fact. So girls, aunties, granmas... if you head anywhere near there... FLEE... Walk as fast as you can... If all else fails, hold a huge handbag and SWAT them with it!

ps: I made that skirt myself... modeled based on the one from Dorothy Perkins that comes with a gut wrenching price tag! COST OF MINE? RM0 :)) The ruffles go all the way around my waist... with a small slit at the end of the skirt for movement... my Dad's reaction? I look like the caramel version of All hail Queen of Bimbo-World Barbie :P

One wonders the difference between me and you... my friends and yours... my family and yours... my wealth and yours... my education and yours... my body and yours... my loves and yours. How has my life been shaped to play out as such? How does one end up with inspiration all around them? How are some people just so gosh darn fantastic? How do we succeed in our own way?

I think, I've never had the concept of choosing my friends... I have never rejected a friend... most of the time you just fall out in time because you are different people... lord knows you can't choose your family :P The fact of the matter is, you attract people that are like-minded! If people love themselves as most humans generally do, they are bound to love people that think and behave the way they do too!

The downside is an important one especially being a teacher/engineer pigsbutt who constantly needs to lend a listening ear... If you attract people who are similar... and if the people around you aren't the prettiest on the inside personality wise... thus, by logic... dum dum dum... you are just like them! It is your personality that needs changing not theirs.

It's a tough thing to mirror yourself by looking at the people around you. Where do you think their lives will lead to? If it isn't an epic glory... you know why you're stuck the way you are. If they are massive successes in their own right... then you're going to be alright :D I believe that their grand success will fuel my drive for well, FABULOUSITY :)) These fantastic people must see something in you that inspires them too!

Erm, we left pretty early by 10pm before the rest of the crowd arrived and as we walk back to the parking lot with all three of our cars side by side... mine psycho red and theirs decent metallic silver... Roshi screams 'You know only Rempits will drive a car like yours!'... AM HONOURED :P
